Brand Story

New Era — From a Small Cap Shop in Buffalo to the Official Cap of Every MLB Team

In 1920, Ehrhardt Koch , a German immigrant, borrowed $5,000 from his aunt and opened a small cap workshop on the third floor of a building in Buffalo, New York. With just 14 employees, the young company still produced 60,000 caps in its very first year — the humble beginning of what would become "New Era".

In the early 1930s, Ehrhardt's son Harold joined the family business and saw an opportunity his father hadn't: fashion caps were losing their appeal, while baseball was booming. He steered the whole company toward the ballpark.

By 1950, New Era had become the sole independent capmaker supplying every team in MLB, and in 1954, Harold redesigned the fitted cap for pro baseball players from the ground up, naming it "59FIFTY" — a design that became legendary and remains the official on-field cap of professional baseball to this day.

From a small factory in Buffalo, New Era is no longer just a baseball cap — it has become a global symbol of street fashion and hip-hop culture. Every cap 17BlueEra selects for you isn't just headwear; it's a piece of over a century of history.

'47 Brand — From a Pushcart by Fenway Park to a Global Sports Brand

In 1938, twin brothers Arthur and Henry D'Angelo — Italian immigrants who arrived in America at just 12 years old — started out selling 2-cent pennants around Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox.

Another piece in the all-over tonal black colorway from this popular design, with the black LA logo blending into the crown. The tortoise-shell brim matches the rest of the line. ’47

From that single pushcart, the brand grew into an official partner of MLB, NFL, NHL, NBA, and more than 900 college programs across America. '47 Brand grew on a passion for sports that never faded, and in 2010 the company officially renamed itself '47, honoring the year it all began.

Here's the interesting part: today, '47 Brand is part of the New Era Cap Company itself (since 2024) — two of America's biggest cap brands, finally united. At 17BlueEra, we curate '47 Brand caps for their signature relaxed curved-brim design — comfortable, adjustable, and effortless for any lifestyle.
